Oh May! The sun is still shining brightly but the bitter sweet chilly wind is starting to set in, giving us teasers to what winter is going to be like. Let’s not waste the beautiful month and see what we can do in the berg this magnificent May.

The Giants Cup

The Giants Cup is a 2-day trial run stage race in the exquisite mountains, set over the 5-day Giants Cup Hiking Trial in the Maloti Drakensberg Park Heritage Site. It is held on the 17/18 of May 2019 and runners will be able to experience 62km of pure mountain beauty. Hiking Giants is the hiking option of Giant’s Cup Trail Run. Hiking Giant’s ambition is to provide a place in the mountains to create an event style race for hikers who look forward to a real physical challenge but without the requirements of running. Hiking Giants is open to all hikers and replicates what the Trail Runners do and is staged under one event. The Giants Cup Trail Run has traditionally been limited to 100 runners in order to preserve the special comradery that is created in this event.

Ridetheberg

Ridetheberg is an event held on 11^th and 12^th of May 2019 and offers 100km of mostly single tracks, breath taking views and an amazing vibe. This race provides a venue that is supporter friendly. There is lots of food, a great kids entertainment area, adventure rides and even a physio. This event also allows you to pick an overnight venue to accommodate all families and budgets. Zingela Trail Run

Zingela Trail Run offers the perfect two-day stage race for shorter and longer distances. This bushveld trail run is situated in an area arid, rocky and thorny but well prepared before the race. Zingela is a paradise trail run enthusiasts, with superb running trails, and has surprises around every corner.

Hiking The Drakensberg For All Levels

On a scale of 1 to 10, you don’t get any better when it comes to Hiking, than the Drakensberg Mountains. A 200km Mountain Range that covers 3 provinces from the Eastern Cap through to Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal. We are fortunate enough to experience the largest portion of the Drakensberg Mountain Range here and KwaZulu-Natal and we cannot stress how privileged we are to have that opportunity.

Home to snow-capped peaks during the winter months, majestic waterfalls, historical rock art and magnificent forests, tourists and South Africans alike are utterly spoiled with unyielding beauty and the opportunity to explore all of these simply by making use of the hiking trails created for this exact reason. Apart from that, the Drakensberg Mountain Range boasts an incredible wealth when it comes to biodiversity. Home to an estimated 290 Bird species, 48 species of animals and some incredibly rare varieties when it comes to plants, the Drakensberg Mountain Range is one that should be explored with wide-open eyes, ears, hearts and minds and what better way to do so than Hiking through the picturesque Mountain Range.

Here at Drakensberg Mountain retreat, we have, over the years, established some amazing trails for guests to make use of whether, hiking, running or mountain biking and we are proud of the experience that these trails offer our guests. If you’re a little bit concerned as to the level of the trails that we have on offer, not to fear, we have trails for every level of hiker whether you’ve never hiked a day in your life or you are a regular, we have trails to suit people from all walks of life.

So, let’s get into it shall we?

Let’s first take a look at what we like to call our DAY HIKES. (These are strenuous hikes)

First up we have our Wingswept Trail. The Wingswept Trail is approximately 13km long and is great for those of you who are very familiar with hiking and what it entails. Starting at the Barnhouse here at Drakensberg Mountain Retreat, the Wingswept Trail offers hikers incredible views of the surrounding mountains; opportunities to encounter some close-up views of two incredible landmarks; namely, The Kerkenberg and Mpokelana Hill; soul-soothing time trekking through Oom Pieters se Bos and most importantly a glimpse of the Vergezient Falls as well as the place of the Hyena. Filled with adventure, beauty, refreshing sights and sounds, the Wingswept Trail is bound to leave you feeling rejuvenated, uplifted and in awe of the beauty that is the Drakensberg Mountain Range.

Next up, the New Beginnings Trail. This trail is a little bit longer than the Wingswept trail, totaling 13.5km long and as with the Wingswept Trail, begins and ends at the Barnhouse. Giving hikers the most spectacular experience of caves, cliff edges, the Old Opstal (an old house built over a century ago); natural splash pools – perfect for you to take a little break and replenish those muscles – Bushman art and so much more. The New Beginnings Trail is an all-time favorite and should not be missed.

The Dumbe Hiking Trail is up next and let’s just say this on is not for the faint hearted. Covering 14km and 400 meters in elevation, which is part of the famous “Dumbe Trail Run,” the Dumbe Hiking Trail will certainly not disappoint the single-track lover, leading hikers along breathtaking paths to unsurpassed, panoramic views of the Central and Northern Drakensberg. Experience magical forests, spectacular views – of both the Maluti and Drakensberg Mountains – the Vergezient falls; the beautiful Lost Pools and the well-known picnic rock that allows you to take a small break and just take in all that the Drakensberg has to offer whilst you rest and replenish yourself.

For those of you who are not experienced Hikers and don’t consider yourselves experts, not to worry, we have what we like to call some 3-hour rambles that are not nearly as strenuous as the above-mentioned trails.

Razor’s Edge (Please note that certain parts of this trail have become inaccessible so please discuss this with reception.) This trail drops down from the Barnhouse into Vergezient Kloof and offers hikers highlights and views of the Wall (a smooth cliff with a bridal fall that drops over the cliff edge into the forest below), beautiful views of KwaZulu-Natal and the chance to experience Old Trail’s view – the wagon route pioneered by Piet Retief’s Voortrekkers in 1838.
Dragon’s Spine provides hikers with an easy walk. Hugging cliff edges, the trail repeatedly dips into a yellowwood forest before ascending gradually to Heldersig viewpoint with its stunning views in every direction.

Not too sure if 3-hour rambles are up your alley? Not to worry, for those of you who have never hiked a day in your life, our easy strolls are perfect for you.

Cliff Edge provides a bird’s eye view of indigenous forests and the Berg, and is ideal for the early morning, or late afternoon. This walk is also suitable for children.
Homefields provides many rewards, especially at sunrise. It offers views deep into KwaZulu-Natal. With the seasonal splendor of the Silver Sugarbush Proteas and an abundance of bird life including Sunbirds.
Heldersig leads you to the highest point on the Dragon’s Spine. At the summit you can just about see forever – which is quite an incredible sight – a stunning 360 panorama of KwaZulu-Natal and the Orange Freestate. Keep an eye out for the famous Black Eagles soaring nearby.

6 Reasons to visit the Northern Drakensberg

Visiting the Northern Drakensberg is something that is a routine part of so many families lives. The Northern berg has become a continued and growing favourite amongst people for yearly vacations and rightfully so.

Taking some time out and enjoying a bit of an adventure away from the big city means you’re leaving behind the hustle and bustle, the buzz, the noise, the buildings and the night lights to enjoy some peace and quiet amongst the mountains. Wake up to picturesque views and fresh air; and experience star gazing as far as the eye can see on cloud free nights, the Drakensberg is a destination not to be ignored.

With so many people visiting the Drakensberg year-round but not being fully sure of all that it has to offer, we thought we would share 6 reasons to enjoy a trip into the Northern Drakensberg region, ensuring that your time in the mountains will be filled with fun, adventure and some picturesque downtime whilst you’re there.

One of the most popular reasons the Northern Drakensberg sees so many visitors and tourists throughout the year is the world-renowned Amphitheatre. The Amphitheatre is one of South Africa’s most impressive cliff faces, over 5 kilometres in length and features cliffs rising roughly 1220 meters along its entire length. The valley floor is over 1830 meters below the highest point of the amphitheatre and is where you can find most photographers capturing the breath-taking beauty that is the amphitheatre in its entirety. What’s more, the Tugela Falls – the world’s second largest falls – plunge over 948 meters from the amphitheatres cliff tops, how incredible?

Which brings us to our next point…

Hiking to the world’s second largest waterfall – The Tugela Falls – is the next reason we think visiting the Northern Drakensberg should be a bucket list item if you haven’t already. Considered one of the best hike’s in KZN, hiking to the Tugela Falls takes you through the Royal National Park along pathways that are filled with wild flowers, Yellowwood forests and some incredible wildlife and birdlife for you to enjoy. Although the hike is 3 hours to the top and another 2 to descend, it is not one that is considered strenuous and can be enjoyed by most so be sure to pack your hiking boots if you’re visiting anytime soon!

Continuing this motion of physical and adventurous activities, are the next on our list of reasons to visit the Drakensberg. Although not everyone’s cup of tea, experiencing the mountain biking and running trails that the Northern Drakensberg has to offer is a fantastic way to really experience the outdoors. Take in the eights, the smells, the views, the wildlife, the birdlife and the flora that the Northern berg has to offer whilst getting that exercise in.

Exercise not entirely your thing? Moving on then…

We mentioned that the Amphitheatre is one of the reasons the Drakensberg sees so many visitors annually, however there is one more golden nugget that tends to draw people to the Northern Drakensberg and that is the chance to experience legitimate San Paintings. Yes, it is true, Bushmen and San people used to occupy the area many, many years ago and it is now a privilege for us to get to experience their history and their culture through the delicate galleries of their art that can be found in caves all over the Drakensberg. Enjoy a hike through the Royal National Park with well-prepared guides who will endeavour to give you the best tour of the caves possible. Apart from this, you can enjoy spectacular views of the Amphitheatre from the route as well as any flora, wildlife and birdlife that may be lurking nearby.

Whilst we are on the topic, wildlife and birdlife that can be found throughout the Northern berg makes our list for obvious reasons. South Africa is home to some incredible and rare wildlife and birdlife that you won’t see anywhere else in the world, so use your time in the berg whilst you are visiting the Amphitheatre, Mountain Biking, Trail Running or visiting the Bushman Paintings to spot the wildlife and birdlife that the Northern berg has to offer.

Adventure In The Berg

Taking a break in the Drakensberg Mountains is always a real treat for those who find themselves caught up in the big city life. Waking up with picturesque views, mountains as far as the eye can see and soaking in all the nature and beauty around can be one of the most incredible ways to just take a breather and relax. But taking a break in the Drakensberg Mountains does not necessarily mean you need to avoid taking part in some fun and adventurous activities that allow you to explore and learn more about the heritage and culture that can be found in the Drakensberg Mountains.

Year-round there are several fun-filled, adventurous activities for you to enjoy. Whether you enjoy walking, running, or mountain biking, we’ve got a few fantastic events for you to choose from; after all, getting the heart rate up is a good way to release those endorphins and enjoy the happiness that comes with it.

With all of this in mind, we thought we would share some of the last few events and activities taking place in the Drakensberg and surrounding areas in the last quarter of the year so that you can plan your next getaway so as not to miss out on any of the action.

Run The Berg is one of our favourite running events throughout the year. The therapeutic nature of the Drakensberg Mountains makes this one that much more incredible. Run The Berg is 2 day trail running event that sees 2 stages. The 2 stages consist of an Intermediate Challenge that sees runners taking part in +/- 15km’s per day and then there is an Extreme Challenge that sees runners taking party in +/- 25km’s per day. Run The Berg is considered the race that provides the best of both worlds, by giving entrants the opportunity to include their greatest supporters – their family and friends.

The accommodation available at the Run The Berg event suits all tastes and budgets and provides runners a space to relax and recuperate between stages whilst their family, friends and loved ones take advantage of the weekend getaway and enjoy all the activities on offer to them, especially the little ones.

Run The Berg takes place on the 6^th and 7^th of October 2018 so don’t forget to get your entries in before it is too late!

Dumbe Trail Run is yet another one of our favourite trail running events that we have the privilege to be a part of.

The Dumbe Trail Run consists of 36Km’s of pristine trails over the course of 2 days.

Taking place in the Drakensberg Mountains you can definitely expect breath-taking views and nature as far as the eye can see. Enjoy taking in the crisp, fresh mountain air every morning and watching the most incredibly fiery sunsets at the end of the day whilst you recuperate for your next stage. This year the Dumbe Trail Run takes place from the 2nd to the 4th of November 2018. (Registration will take place on the 2nd of November from 1400pm through to 19:00pm)

Berg And Bush is always a great event for people to take part in. Berg and Bush takes mountain Bikers from the top of the Drakensberg Escarpment and down into KwaZulu-Natal, negotiating world famous single track trails into the bushveld below Winterton.

There are 3 events to choose from within the Berg and Bush race; the Descent, the Great Trek – both of which are 3 day events – and then there is the Original 2 day event.

Riders can enjoy camping along the banks of the Tugela River and recuperate and prepare for the next 2 days of incredible bushveld riding. With farm-style hospitality and the opportunity to experience an area that is unique and rich in history and culture – not forgetting the outstanding riding – riders are bound to experience a proper adventure on their bikes!

Top 5 Tips On How To Be Properly Prepared For Hiking During Winter

A winter hike in the Drakensberg, how incredible does that sound? Exploring the picturesque scenery of the mountains in the cool atmosphere of the winter air, taking in all the sights, sounds and smells that the change in weather brings about potential animal encounters and sightings, sounds like the perfect winter activity to us. Generally, people tend to shy away from hiking during winter due to the drop in temperatures but this does not mean that you need to send your hiking boots into hibernation, in fact, hiking in winter can be a fun experience for the whole family.

While hiking in winter can be breathtakingly beautiful there is also a lot of planning and preparation that should go into it beforehand to ensure that you are not only properly prepared but appropriately equipped as well, as you can never be too sure what you may encounter or what mother nature may decide to do/throw at you throughout the duration of the hike.

With all of this in mind and winter temperatures already dropping we thought we would share a few tips and tricks for your winter hike.

Dress in layers or like an onion as some would say.

This is one of the most essential tips to consider when hiking in winter as temperatures can change quite drastically in a short space of time. Being dressed in layers and having a variety of insulating clothing will help your body to regulate your temperature throughout the day/night. Some handy clothing tips: try wearing two layers of gloves – one for warmth and the other for waterproofing – and wear thick socks as your toes and feet are generally the first place you will feel the cold.

Check the weather. Although this might seem like the obvious thing to do, it is important to get a well-rounded idea of the weather and conditions for your hike and not simply just the temperature. All aspects of the weather are important in this kind of situation so be sure to pay attention to things like precipitation, humidity levels (just as a precaution), wind speed, daylight hours, visibility (possibility of misty or foggy conditions) and if the temperatures are going to drop to extreme lows; the snow forecast or possibility of snowfall in the area.

Bring a survival kit. One of the best pieces of advice we advise you to take, is the preparation and inclusion of a survival kit for your hike. Even the most basic survival kit can make the world of difference in potentially difficult situations.

Things to consider including would be the following:

Items that will assist in starting an emergency fire (water proof matches or a lighter and even a small amount of tinder)
Something that will assist should you need to signal for help (A flare or a mirror that can be used to reflect light as a signal to anyone in the area)
A whistle
High energy foods and snacks
Extra water
Knife

Take an experienced friend along. Hiking on your own is not something that is always advised, we suggest taking a group of friends along or at least one friend who is considered experienced when it comes to hiking in the area you plan to hike. In doing so, your experienced hiking buddy can help you to choose the right gear in preparation for your hike as well as assist with identifying potentially dangerous situations. With that in mind, we would also recommend providing one friend at home a detailed breakdown of where you will start your hike, where you plan to end it and the route you are going to take so that should anything go wrong, they can provide emergency services with vital information should the need arise (This also then means that you will need to map out your route and all the important details of your hike such as the start and finish points, the route you are going to take as well as any planned stops you are going to make – this goes hand in hand with knowing your route.)

Invest in good hiking gear. We have identified some basic hiking items that every winter hiker should ensure they have:

Waterproof pants, boots and jackets (Sturdy and insulated shoes will keep your feet warm and make hiking the terrain easier.)
An insulated jacket
A Lightweight backpack
Hiking pole
A Hat
Gloves (These ensure proper circulation in your hands and fingers)
Goggles or sunglasses with a strap
Headlamp

The above-mentioned tips are a few of the most important things to remember when planning and preparing for a hike during winter. It is better to be over-prepared than under-prepared in this instance. But, with all of this in mind, these are not the only things you need to consider when planning and preparing for a hike so be sure to do a bit of your own research beforehand on hiking as well as on the area itself so that you get accustomed to what you may need to do or to expect.

The Drakensberg Mountains, also known as “the Dragon Mountain”, a breath-taking and awe-inspiring range of mountains that stretch well over 200km’s with an average height of 2900 metres, forming a natural border between Lesotho and KZN, sounds incredible, doesn’t it?

But what makes the Drakensberg one of the most famous Mountain Ranges in Africa?

It is riddled with picturesque waterfalls, rock pools, mountain streams, caves, mountain air and spaces that bring both visitors or tourists to South Africa as well as us local folk who cannot seem to get enough of our beautiful country and all that it has to offer! Speaking of what’s on offer, the Drakensberg Mountains have a wide array of fun activities available for people from all walks of life to enjoy whether it be trail running, river rafting, fishing, quad biking, horse riding or simply hiking; there really is so much to do but for now we have decided to focus our attention on the Mountain Biking opportunities and culture that you can experience here in the Drakensberg Mountains.

It is safe to say that the Drakensberg Mountains offer some of the best Mountain Biking trails in South Africa with some of the most exquisite scenery.

Home to major Mountain Bike races such as the Sani Pass Transfrontier Mountain Bike Epic, the Volvo Classic, the Sani 2c; and the Berg and Bush (to name a few) the Drakensberg Mountains prove to be the ideal location for novice and accomplished riders! The terrain of the Drakensberg Mountains and the Drakensberg itself provide endless scenic riding routes that each have varying distance and climbing requirements making it the perfect place for the whole family to enjoy.

Here at Drakensberg Mountain Retreat we currently have 1 trail for Mountain Bikers to utilise that travels through the wattles and along the veld towards the Vodacom Tower at Razor’s Edge and back. This trail is roughly 3KM’s and is more of a casual outride but enjoyable nonetheless. So, whether you’re experienced or not you can enjoy an adventurous bike ride and then head straight back to the retreat for some good home cooked meals and a nice cozy bed without having to make an unnecessary drive home. What’s more, the kids and the family can enjoy a nice relaxing weekend away making use of our children’s room and playground area; snooker table, indoor swimming pool, board games, relaxing lounge areas and the great outdoors, ensuring a wonderful time is had by all. We are excited for the expansion of some incredible Mountain biking trails in the near future so keep your eyes and ears peeled!

Spend a weekend running unforgettable trails with spectacular views in the Northern Drakensberg at the 2018 Dumbe Trail Run Event that takes place at Drakensberg Mountain Retreat. Bring your family and friends and enjoy a fun-filled weekend.

2017’s Dumbe Trail Run was such a wonderful success with the inaugural winners Buthi Mokwenja and Julia Hackland coming out on top. This success has become evident in the feedback received!

The Dumbe Trail Run consists of 36KM pristine trails over the course of 2 days. Taking place in the Drakensberg Mountains you can definitely expect views that take your breath away.

Not only does the scenery provide picturesque backgrounds for your photo opportunities but the fresh air and crisp smell of nature has a way of detoxing and relaxing the mind, body and soul, helping rejuvenate the senses.

We also have a pool available to our guests if the weather permits, you can enjoy a nice cool dip in the pool whilst lazing around for the day. The cosy lounge areas at Drakensberg Mountain Retreat provide the perfect place to relax. Grab one of your good books or a magazine and chill. In winter the lounge and its fireplaces go hand-in-hand with a good book, a blanket and a cup of hot chocolate to pass the time. For those that are more of the adventurous and energetic type, we have some incredible hiking/walking/running trails for you to choose from as well as some easy strolls for those who consider themselves the “inexperienced.”

We have three Day Hike options available to you that are all roughly between 13 and 15km’s long and certainly won’t disappoint with mesmerising forests, waterfalls, breath-taking views and lush vegetation. If these are a bit to strenuous for you we have two 3 Hour Trails for you to enjoy, taking you to Heldersig Viewpoint or along the Wagon Route pioneered by Piet Retief’s Voortrekkers in 1838. If you’re more prepared for an easy stroll, you have three to choose from, and don’t worry, you will still experience the magnificent views, lush vegetation and fresh air that the Drakensberg has to offer!

Picnic Weddings at Drakensberg Mountain Retreat

A wedding is always such a romantic, happy day, filled with the love and laughter of family and friends. So much planning and preparation goes into said special day from décor, to flowers, rings, outfits and most importantly the venue that we thought we’d help make the planning and decision-making a little easier for you!

Enjoy your wedding day in the splendour of the Drakensberg Mountains here at Drakensberg Mountain Retreat. Drakensberg Mountain Retreat provides a picturesque back drop for your beautiful day with magnificent scenery for photos and, to top it all off, we will throw in one nights’ accommodation in our honeymoon suite at no extra charge!

While picnic is the operative word here, we do have accommodation and spaces available to you to ensure your wedding weekend or evening away is as comfortable and romantic as you’d imagined. First up, our Vergezient Lodge is a unique resort with breath-taking views and a warm, unique and charming atmosphere that we take pride in creating and providing you with for your special day! Why the Lodge? Well, the Vergezient lodge offers a 100km long panoramic view of the Central and Northern Drakensberg including the Amphitheatre and the Royal Natal National Park – said to be one of THE best views in the Drakensberg – and makes the perfect accommodation space for your guests as well as provides an incredibly beautiful outdoor area with views for your picnic style wedding. There is, however, another piece of Drakensberg heaven that we have on offer to you and that is our Barnhouse. With a wood-burning stove, a fireplace, large veranda, flower filled conservatories; and a large central venue for you to make use of however you need, the Barnhouse lends itself to the most rustic yet picturesque picnic style wedding adventure yet!

With all of this in mind, we thought we would share with you a picnic style wedding we have recently hosted here at Drakensberg Mountain Retreat, and boy what a magnificent wedding it was! It went a little something like this:

There were 19 adults and six children.
Drakensberg Mountain Retreat provided “welcoming drinks” for the guests after the formal wedding ceremony and during the photo session with delicious snack platters place at the picnic style reception for guests to enjoy. The drink of choice was a classic, “Virgin Mojito” an alcohol-free beverage consisted of a mix of Sprite, Soda, fresh lemon and mint. The snack platters consisted of a cheese, snack, fruit sosatie, tasty dip and a small biltong selection.
The bride provided lovely packed picnic baskets with everything required for a luxurious and romantic picnic.
The seating at the wedding was rustic, in true Drakensberg Mountain Retreat style with wooden benches and cushions used at the ceremony and blankets or hay bales covered in hessian at the picnic style reception.
The décor, also a rustic type setting, with some of the decor items made or supplied by us and some by the bridal couple themselves. Very few items that were used at the wedding were hired from a local wedding supply company which saves costs and adds a little extra uniqueness to your special day!

We also have another tradition here at Drakensberg Mountain Retreat known as the DMR Mthobisi Wedding Horse Run whereby Mthobisi – our Horse Carer – will round the Horses up in preparation for once your vows are done thereafter sending our beloved horses galloping through to celebrate such a momentous occasion. This adds an incredibly beautiful touch to a romantic moment!

If you are looking to host your picnic style wedding here at Drakensberg Mountain Retreat it is important for you to note that we do suggest making use of all our accommodation facilities as other guests may disrupt proceedings during their own activity. This will keep the venue and the event exclusive to you and your guests which makes for a fun event surrounded by family, friends and the people that matter most to you!

We have two facilities for your guests to utilise, namely the Vergezient Lodge and the Zonderntwyvel Barnhouse. Wedding groups are given the option to book either one or both of these buildings for their exclusive use.

6 Tips To Ensure You Are Properly Prepared For Your Summer Hiking Trip

Hiking in the Drakensberg, a task that so many take part in throughout the year. Although seemingly simple, hiking is not necessarily for the faint-hearted.

Preparation for your next hiking trip is the first and most important aspect to remember. Being properly prepared for hiking will ensure that your summer hiking trip doesn’t turn into a life-threatening ordeal. Making sure you are properly prepared for unexpected situations such as getting lost, dehydration, weather-related issues, accidents and injury is a huge step towards assuring that your hike will live up to your expectations.

With all of the above in mind we have decided to put together six tips to help prepare you for your hike over the summer season in the Drakensberg

Prepare a Trip Plan

This piece of advice is always a priority for us.

Prepare your trip thoroughly!

Making sure that you have a route marked out is a great way to keep yourself on track as well as to ensure that you are well prepared and essentially safer than if you weren’t to plan.

Go old school with this, pull out a map and mark off the route you’d like to take – including the starting point as well as the finish point – stops that you plan on making whether it be for food or just to have a rest; be sure to mark off any possible areas you may get lost or any detours you may find yourself on; lastly it is important to mark off possible areas for you to camp overnight should the need arise. (If you’re using a GPS device – more information on this in point 3- then be sure to programme it accordingly with your route and any other information it can hold.)

For us, over preparing is never enough in these situations. You can never be too prepared for something of this nature so be sure to take the planning process seriously and cover all your bases.

Do your research and cover all areas of the hike!

Leave word

One of the first and most important things to do before you start your hike is to let a close and trusted family member or friend know the date you are intending to begin your hike, the route that you are hiking, the stops you plan to make, the destination(s) you plan to start and end your hike and any other relevant information such as potential detours, areas of potential stops or overnight stays and so forth.

By providing a trusted loved one with information such as the above, you are ensuring that should something go wrong, there is someone other than yourself and your hiking partners who is well equipped enough to ensure a thorough search and rescue plan is implemented along the route you were hiking.

GPS device

Another important aspect to check off your list in preparing for your Summer hike is that you have a properly functioning and fully charged GPS device or compass (depending on how long you plan to hike for and how old school you really want to go.)

Although you have potentially mapped out your route, highlighted each stop and marked off your start and finish points, you can never be sure whether you may come across changes in the course along the way or obstacles that may cause you to take a detour – such as fallen rocks or debris – in which case having a navigational device ensures you travel in the right direction at all times and that you don’t get lost should conditions worsen.

Summer months still bring cold temperatures in the evening so pack warmer clothing

Summer time in the Drakensberg tends to bring scorching hot days with afternoon thunderstorms and in the evening the temperature drops quite drastically which is why it is vital to pack a mixture of summer and winter clothing.

Although you may only plan for a day hike, you can never be too sure what might happen throughout the day so rather be prepared with warm clothing, some extra food and a blanket in case you are forced to camp over night somewhere.

Plenty of water and Salty foods to keep sodium levels high

Summer weather is certainly not easy on the body and hiking through a summer’s day will drain the body of essential fluids and nutrients which is why it is important to ensure you have packed the essentials; water and salty foods. Some examples of these are things like salted peanuts, trail mix if you need a bit of variation; tuna salad, dried fruit or veggies and energy bars (note: these are just several examples of the kinds of foods you can pack and this in entirely up to you and the research you have done.)

Take a small first aid kit

Pack a small first aid kit before you commence your hike and pack according to the complexity and length of your hike.

High temperatures in summer, humidity and the unknown when it comes to the hiking route or trail itself can bring about unexpected surprises on your route. It is best to be prepared with a few first aid essentials in your day pack.

A Brief History Of Drakensberg Mountain Retreat

When Dave was about 50 years of age, he bought the farm known as “Vergezient” (the name dates back to the days of the “Voortrekkers” evident by the number of Historical sites and monuments in the nearby vicinity dedicated to these brave pioneers.)

The farm was situated in the Northern Drakensberg area. Prior to this, Dave had speculated with cattle farming and had leased some grazing land for this purpose. However, when the lease was nearing the end of its term, he decided to acquire his own farm for this purpose. He had always wanted to own a farm as he and his siblings – sister’s Dorothy (Dolly) and Rosemarie and brother Charlie – had spent many happy holidays with relatives in the Bergville area. His paternal grandparents had also farmed in this part of KwaZulu-Natal which was another reason for wishing to acquire his own farm in this beautiful part of South Africa.

When Dave was originally shown the property by the selling agent, he realised it was not ideal for cattle farming as it was covered in Wattle Trees with no buildings or other facilities provided. However, it was only when he and the agent walked to the end of the plateau from where incredibly beautiful views of a vast section of the Drakensberg are to be seen, that he decided to buy the farm even though it would be difficult to manage grazing on the top ridge and further grazing down below, which was difficult to get to.

He started developing the property by building 4 sheds as cattle holding facilities. One of these sheds was used partly for accommodation and storage of feed and was frequently used by Dave, his family and friends over weekends and holidays.

As Dave resided in Pretoria, from where he ran a business as a professional Engineering Geologist, he employed a farm manager to take care of the cattle and sell Wattle wood on his behalf. Unfortunately, as the Afrikaans saying goes – Ver van jou goed, na aan jou skade – the cattle never increased in number and the sale of wood brought in very little.

Some years later, Dave decided to re-design one of the sheds to provide accommodation for hikers. During this time he employed a professional person who had experience in hiking trails to assist in setting up formal hiking trails on the farm. The decision to do so proved to be right as well as very useful. Formal hiking trails are meant to vary in scenery thereby always providing something different for the hikers to see. The result achieved exactly that, with scenery altering from open spaces, to valleys and through bush with many ups and downs; as well as varied degrees of difficulty. However, it proved to be an enormous task due to the extensive and, at times, dangerous cliff edges.

Dave named the newly renovated shed “The Barnhouse”. Perhaps he over-estimated the accommodation needs of serious hikers as “The Barnhouse” was almost too sophisticated for such hikers who do not wish to pay too much for accommodation.

Round about this time, Dave happened to meet Andrew Attwood, the owner of a business known as “The Antbear” near Giant’s Castle and they got chatting about the B&B which Andrew ran there very successfully. Inspired by this discussion, Dave (who was always gifted with wonderful ideas!) decided to change the second shed into a Lodge and set out to build the Lodge without any plans whatsoever.

From a practical point of view, this meant regular trips to the farm from Pretoria in his trusty old Merc or one of his sturdy trucks or bakkies with his loyal and beloved staffie Baloo constantly at his side; checking on the work; positioning out where or what the builders needed to do; driving back home following this before returning to the farm, sometimes just a few days later to check on progress. As the farm is “off the beaten track,” logistics proved to be a nightmare. For example, building materials and the likes had to be transported either from Harrismith (the nearest large town) or from Pretoria with the last part of the journey ending with a 12-Kilometre stretch of narrow, gravel district road which, at times, proved to be rather a challenge to say the least.

This building period was also a difficult and extremely challenging time for the builders who, having undertaken certain work as agreed upon would, on the occasion of Dave’s next visit, be instructed to alter something, such as a door or window that needed to be moved to another position. The most important thing, however, is that, in the end, it turned out to be very beautiful, with just the right ambience for a Lodge in an area of historical importance. It has the feel of a Colonial building, especially furnished with some beautiful antiques, but steeped in history with Retief’s Pass and Retief cliff nearby.

For some time Dave’s nephew, Judson, assisted with the building of the Lodge, as did his brother-in-law, Len Warburton (Jud’s father), making it quite a family affair.

Having completed the Lodge, which he called “Vergezient” due to the extensive views, he set about altering and improving the Barnhouse into accommodation suitable for Retreat groups as well as being a gathering place for family and friends.

Of course, given that Dave resided and ran a business in Pretoria, it was necessary for him to put staff in place to run the establishment consisting of the Lodge and the Barnhouse which, in itself, provided quite a challenge because of the distance separating them. The use, and convenience, of modern technology proved essential at this time.

Dave was one of those people whose plans never ceased – no sooner was something completed, he was ready to alter or extend it. Sadly he passed away in January 2014, aged 65, after a long and brave fight against cancer. Apart from Management changes in the running of the Lodge and Barnhouse, no further changes to the buildings have been made apart from general on-going maintenance being performed.

Dave’s family decided that his final resting place, together with that of his beloved Baloo, would be on his beloved farm so they scattered their ashes from the summit of Heldersig, one of the trails incorporating the highest point of the farm from where a 360° view of the Drakensberg and valleys below and the red sandstone koppies of the Free State too can be seen. Quite beautiful.

Alongside this, we have a pool available to our guests that goes hand in hand with the above. Although a slow walk is not nearly as tiring or strenuous as a hike, that doesn’t mean your body wouldn’t appreciate a nice cool dip in the pool afterwards. Not only will a dip in our pool help your body to wind down, it provides a great way to just relax.

More of an “indoors” person? We have something for you to!

Our cosy lounge area is the perfect spot to relax with a book or magazine. What’s more, in winter the lounge is filled with the smell of fresh fire wood and there’s plenty of warmth to go around, making it the perfect spot to enjoy a cuppa while you tuck into that book!

If you’re looking for something that’s relaxing but not too relaxing. There are several great board games for you to make use of. Not only will these give your mind a bit of an exercise but they’re a great way to have some fun with family and friends making for hours of fun and laughter!

Other than the above, we highly recommend taking some time out to do some yoga! After all, who wouldn’t want to practice their sun salutation with the view of the Drakensberg Mountains in the background? Fresh air and yoga are a great way to make sure your body is aligned, relaxed and prepared for the days, weeks or months ahead.

Visit The Golden Gate National Park, Just A One Hour Drive From DMR!

There is an abundance of activities available on offer at the Drakensberg Mountain retreat and its surroundings…there are plenty of day trips and excursions to enjoy within proximity to the Drakensberg Mountain Retreat. One of the favourites being a trip to the Golden Gate National Park.

We have found that over the last few years, the majority of our guests (most being foreigners) like to take full advantage of the area and visit The Golden Gate National Park and enjoy all that is on offer there whilst staying with us. The Sandstone cliffs of the Golden Gate National Park lie 2200m above sea level and provide visitors with plenty to do and breathtaking views to soak in…

MORE ABOUT THE AREA AND ITS SURROUNDS
• Roughly 120 km south east of Bloemfontein and 15 km south of Wepenar on Route 701, lies the Golden Gate National Park, through which the Caledon River flows.
• The park is also home to the Welbedacht Dam (southern parts of the reserve).
• The Basotho Cultural Village which forms part of the park will take you back more than 400 years. Take note how European settlers influenced life and culture of these people today.
• You may even have an opportunity to meet/consult a Sangoma (traditional medicine man)!
Nestled in the foothills of the Maluti Mountains of the North-Eastern Free State lies the Golden Gate Highlands National Park. The park was named after the shades of gold that shoot from the sun onto the prominent sandstone cliffs in the afternoons. A blog about Christmas in September? Well there are exactly 111 days until Christmas and if the rest of the year is anything to go by, then it will be here before we know it! Christmas time means something different for everyone; children enjoy Christmas for more obvious reasons but the adults may appreciate the time with family and friends and possibly associate this time of the year with holidays and adventures too!

A South African Christmas, in particular is a unique holiday for us all due to the fact that our country comprises of so many cultures, languages and landscapes. Some South African families prefer an intimate meal at home with family. Others make a large event and throw a party where all are welcome. Those that dare, choose to leave the comfort of their own home and take advantage of their time off by taking a trip away from their “home comforts”. Individuals may not even celebrate Christmas but use the time to give their bodies the rest and relaxation they deserve after a long year.

People staying in the self-catering suites will not have access to the dining room and will be entiely responsible for their meals.
Christmas day meals in the Lodge will be slightly different to our usual breakfast and dinner. Breakfast will be served on Christmas Day and a mid-afternoon Christmas Lunch will be served thereafter.
Those wanting to do an excursion of their choice after breakfast will not miss out on a meal.

San Art And Bushman Paintings In The Drakensberg

The intriguing and history filled “San rock art”, or more commonly referred to as “bushman paintings” are one of the main reasons tourists choose to visit the Drakensberg Mountains. And rightly so, the art has revealed a great deal about the history of the “San people”, South Africa and European colonists, all dating back to 26 000 years ago. The rock art can be found in various locations all over the Drakensberg Mountains, including here at DMR.

The “New Beginnings” hiking trail at the Drakensberg Mountain Retreat features examples of these incredible pieces of art history.

Features in the San Art at DMR include;
– 14 meters of rock art
– 282 paintings (in orange, red, bichrome, polychrome, yellow and black)
– 145 human figures are depicted in these paintings
– 111 animals are illustrated here

History
The name “San” originates from the Khoi word “Sonqua” (meaning “those without cattle”). In 1652 Dutch settlers described these same men as “hunter gatherers” and genetic evidence suggests that they are amongst the oldest people in the world.

The bushman paintings depict a range of stories that reveal a lot about their lifestyle and history. There are many paintings of these people hunting and dancing. Their “rain dance” in particular is known for its spiritual power – they believed that dancing, besides for rainfall purposes, could be used for healing, hunting and removing societal tensions.
Viewing these paintings for yourself is something one has to do to be able to appreciate the significance and history.

The tourism value of the San Art at the Drakensberg Mountain Retreat
The San Bushman Rock Paintings located at the Drakensberg Mountain Retreat were recently put to the test by The AMAFA Management Plan and the results were as follows…
The tourism value of the site at DMR is high due to various attributes;
1. The diversity of art on site
2. The fact that it is easily accessible for people to view
3. It forms part of a group of cultural heritage sites that can all be visited on route to the bushman paintings.
4. The hike up to the San Art is lined with Dutch/Afrikaaner architectural history (19th /20th century).
5. Ox-wagon tracks that rasped stone surfaces can also be seen on the way up to the viewing of the paintings.
6. You may even be lucky enough to spot Antelope, grey Duiker, Eland, Giraffe, Horses, Hartebeest, Impala, Feline and Blesbokke on your journey.

BIRDWATCHING IN THE BERG – OUR TOP TIPS FOR GREAT SIGHTINGS

Bird watching isn’t THE most popular activity amongst visitors in the Drakensberg for nothing! Besides the vast and majestic backdrop which appeals to all, the landscape is home to thousands of species of birds which are a must see for avid bird watchers. Why not visit this area of rich bird life for your next holiday?

The Drakensberg region holds a number of unique species that attracts birders from all over the world! Visitors come to see the various raptors, vultures, cranes, bustards and more…

Most birders bucket-lists feature the sought-after;

Other species that people tend to look out for can be seen in the “forest areas” of the Drakensberg, these include the Donnybrook, Creighton, Cape Parrot, Orange Ground Thrush and Blue Swallow. In the higher lying areas (consisting mostly of grassland), people attempt to spot the Blue and Grey Crowned Cranes, the Denham’s Bustard and the famous Secretary bird.

Pack a relevant field guide for the area
The best birders can identify a bird from many meters away but binoculars will most definitely enhance your experience. Its worth spending a little extra on these when you buy your pair.
Do some research before taking your excursion and make a list of birds you wish to see. Try to aim for the correct landscape and times of day to see those specific birds.
Use your phone to record sounds that you hear and use this to identify the birds you couldn’t physically see, later.

Pack your camera if you wish to document which birds you managed to spot.

General tips for all proposals:

Hire a photographer to capture this once in a lifetime experience.
